For those of you who want to install a new custom ROM on your rooted Nexus 5, you will need to use either CWM or TWRP recovery. If you used our Nexus 5 root method, you should have TWRP recovery installed.
If you want to use CWM Recovery instead, you can download ROM Manager from Play Store to flash latest version of CWM Recovery. Likewise, you can also install TWRP recovery by downloading Goo Manager from Play Store. You can use the two apps to switch between CWM or TWRP recovery once rooted.
Now, before installing a new custom ROM, make sure you download the custom ROM zip file. I highly recommend downloading on your computer first, then check for any errors by opening up the zip file. If you can open the zip file without any errors, that means the zip file is good (sometimes they can go bad during download) and you can copy the ROM zip file to your phone. You may also have to download additional zip files such as Gapps, which are required on most custom ROMs for Nexus 5.
Step 1. Turn off your Nexus 5. Then hold down Volume Down and Power buttons together for about 2 seconds until you see the bootloader menus.
Step 2. Once in bootloader menu, use your Volume buttons to choose “Recovery mode” then hit the Power button to enter your CWM or TWRP recovery.
Step 3. Once in recovery, choose “wipe data/factory reset” for CWM or “WIpe” for TWRP recovery to do a factory reset. This will erase all of your settings, apps, app data but will not erase any personal files on your internal storage such as videos, photos, etc…etc… You may be able to bypass this step on certain custom ROMs and the only way to find out is to install the custom ROM without wipe. If you want to do that, make sure you make a backup ROM first!
Step 4. To install a custom ROM zip file or any zip files, you can select “install from zip” for CWM or “Install” for TWRP. Browse your file system and find the zip file you want to install and install it!
Step 5. Once you have installed all the zip files you need to, simply reboot and wait for your new custom ROM to boot. Your custom ROM should boot fully to a new welcome screen within 5-10 minutes.
If you get stuck on bootloop, you can try re-installing custom ROM after formatting /system/. You can do this on CWM recovery by going to “Mounts & Storage” from main menu, choose “format /system” then repeat the installation process from Step 3. For TWRP, go to “Wipe” then “Advanced Wipe”, and choose “format /system” then repeat from Step 3.
